PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Kerry D'Ambroise (Lowell, Mass.) scored a hat trick Wednesday afternoon to lift Plymouth State University over Castleton State College, 4-1, in PSU's field hockey home opener at Arold Field.
The visitors took an early lead, but D'Ambroise answered with a pair of first half goals to put PSU ahead for good. Junior Lauren Plummer (Monument Beach, Mass.) added an insurance goal for the Panthers midway through the second half, and D'Ambroise (right) finished off her first career hat trick in the final minute of play.
The Panthers out-shot the Spartans by a 23-10 count. PSU improves to 2-0 on the season, while Castleton drops to 0-4. Castleton won last year's game in overtime, 4-3.
Senior Marie Amaral (Barre, Vt.) put the Spartans on the board less than eight minutes into the game, with an assist from classmate Molly Fraher (Goshen, Conn.). D'Ambroise evened the score an unassisted goal less than three minutes later, and put PSU ahead 2-1 with a goal at the 26:43 mark, with an assist from junior Kristina Conroy (Wakefield, Mass.)
Plummer extended PSU's lead to 3-1 with her first goal of the season 11 minutes into the second half, and D'Ambroise's last goal was set up on a cross by senior Sarah Smith (Lexington, Mass.)
Sophomore Elyse Sedgley (Hopkinton, N.H.) made six saves in the Panther goal to record the victory, while Castleton sophomore netminder Bridget Dusha (Greenwich, N.Y.) finished with 11 saves.
PSU opens Little East Conference play this Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Salem State. Castleton plays its fourth straight road game next Wednesday, Sept. 16, at New England College (4:00 p.m.)
