Early goal leads PSU Field Hockey over Bridgewater State
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Sammi Romano (Kingston, N.H.) scored the lone goal of the game early in the opening half Saturday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University past Bridgewater State College, 1-0, in Little East Conference field hockey play at Arold Field.
The Panthers concluded the regular season at 10-7 overall and finished in seventh place in the LEC at 6-5. The Bears fall to 9-7 overall and finished the season in fifth place in the LEC at 7-4. Both teams will be heading to the LEC Tournament beginning with a first-round game Tuesday on the road.
Plymouth State took the early lead six minutes into the opening half when Romano fired a goal on a feed from sophomore Lauren Bergeron (New Hampton, N.H.). Bridgewater State put the pressure on in the closing minutes of the first half, but failed to tie the score.
The Panthers had the best chance of scoring again with 15 minutes left in regulation when senior Kerry D'Ambroise (Lowell, Mass.) shot and hit the right goal post. Plymouth State stayed the offensive for the remainder of the game to pick up the conference win.
PSU out-shot the Bears 16-8. Panther sophomore goalie Elyse Sedgley (Hopkinton, N.H.) picked up her seventh career shutout, recording four saves. BSC junior goaltender Katie Weber (Arlington, Mass.) made 13 saves in the losing effort.
