PSU Field Hockey nips Westfield in overtime
Morin scores game-winner for Panthers
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Jackie Morin (Scarborough, Maine) scored with 8:02 remaining in the second overtime Saturday afternoon to lift Plymouth State University to a 2-1 victory over Westfield State University in Little East Conference field hockey action.
Plymouth State, currently in second place in the 12-team conference, survived Westfield’s upset bid in boosting its record to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the LEC. Westfield drops to 4-7 and 1-5.
Morin planted her game winner in the back of the goal after a missed shot by teammate Christina Parisi (Hampton, N.H.). Westfield goalie Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, Mass.) made a spectacular save on Parisi’s shot, lunging back towards the goal for a diving stop, but Morin got the ball on a scramble in front of the net for the game-winner.
Plymouth State took a 1-0 lead with 3:34 remaining in the first half on a goal by junior Lauren Bergeron (New Hampton, N.H.) following a penalty corner attempt. Westfield knotted the score at 1-all 1:24 into the second half on a goal by junior Jessica Donovan (Methuen, Mass.), with an assist by Jessi Gould (Canton, Mass.)
The Owls’ Nicole Gagnon had a penalty shot in the 47th minute. The penalty shot was deflected by PSU goalie Hilary Lemelin (Milan, N.H.) then hit the crossbar. Lemelin made 15 saves in the well-played game while McCarthy had 14 saves.
Plymouth outshot Westfield, 24-21, and the Panthers dominated the penalty corners, 17-3.
The Panthers return home to host Springfield College in a non-conference match Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
