PSU Field Hockey receives ECAC New England Tourn. berth

Panthers compete in playoffs for 10th time in 11 years

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University field hockey team will make its 10th post-season appearance in the past 11 years this weekend after receiving a berth into the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Tournament.

The Panthers (12-7) are seeded third in this year’s five-team tournament and will receive a first-round bye on Wednesday.  PSU will take the field on Saturday, Nov. 13, at Bridgewater State University (Mass.) against second-seeded Endicott College (11-8) in the second semifinal at 2:00 p.m. The first semifinal (11:00 a.m.) is between top-seeded Bridgewater State (11-8) and the winner of Wednesday’s opening round contest between fourth-seeded New England College (11-10) and fifth-seeded Daniel Webster College (11-4).  Bridgewater State will host the championship game Sunday at 12 noon.

PSU is competing in the ECAC Tournament for the seventh time in the past eight years following three straight NCAA berths from 2000-02.  The Panthers have lost by one goal in the past two ECAC championship games, including an overtime setback to the University of New England last season.

Saturday’s semifinal will be the second meeting of the season between PSU and Endicott.  The Gulls took the season opener for the two schools, 3-1, in Plymouth on Labor Day weekend.

Led by 11th-year head coach Bonnie Lord, PSU received the ECAC berth after finishing in a tie for second place in the Little East Conference with an 8-3 mark. The Panthers were defeated in the LEC semifinals by Bridgewater State, 2-1 in overtime.  Endicott finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference during the regular season before being knocked out of the CCC Tournament in the first round by Western New England College, 2-1.

            PSU is making its 15th ECAC post-season appearance.  The Panthers’ previous selections came in 1983, ‘85, ‘86, ‘87, ‘90, ‘95, ‘96, ‘97, ‘03, ‘04, ‘05, ‘07, ‘08, and ‘09 with their two championships coming in 1987 and 2004.
