Panthers double up Pride
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – A pair of three-goal spurts lifted the Plymouth State University field hockey team to a 6-3 victory over Springfield College Wednesday night at rainy Amos Alonzo Stagg Field.
Plymouth State was led by sophomore Jackie Morin, who recorded a hat trick with three goals and one assist. Senior Erin Norris also collected two goals, while freshman Nikki Garvey added a goal and an assist and senior Lauren Bergeron chipped in with two assists.
The Panthers are now 11-1, while the Pride falls to 2-10 overall. Junior Meghan McHugh was the sparkplug for the Pride with two goals.
PSU scored three goals in a span of 6:08 early in the first half to take a quick 3-0 lead. Norris gave PSU the initial lead at 5:15 on a goal from directly out front, assisted by Bergeron. Morin struck for her first goal (unassisted) at 9:16, and two minutes later, Morin found Garvey on the left, and Garvey drilled it home for a 3-0 lead.
McHugh scored an unassisted goal for Springfield with less than three minutes left in the half, making it a 3-1 Panther advantage lead at the half.
SC sophomore Kelly Gallo orchestrated a superb solo effort just 23 seconds into the second half, carrying the ball along the right sideline, then deking a defender to place the ball right on the stick of senior Alexa Carlson. Carlson did not miss, cutting the margin to 3-2. SC sophomore Amy Dean was awarded a penalty shot just moments later, but PSU junior goalkeeper Hilary Lemelin made a clean stick save.
McHugh fired a rocket to tie it up for the home folks five minutes later. Her goal was assisted by senior Kaila Dee, and SC had all the momentum. But then came PSU's second three-goal spurt. This time the Panthers scored in a span of 6:07.
Morin scored twice, within a matter of 1:32, to take that momentum away from SC. The goals came at 47:26 on an assist from Garvey, and at 48:58 (unassisted). Finally, Norris scored her second goal of the night at 53:33, from Bergeron. Morin leads the team with 11 goals and 28 points.
PSU returns to Little East Conference action Saturday with a visit to Salem State University for a 12 noon start. SC plays a NEWMAC conference contest Saturday at home vs. Wheaton.
