Panthers compete in playoffs for 11th time in 12 years
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University field hockey team will make its 11th post-season appearance in the past 12 years this weekend after receiving a berth into the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Tournament.
The Panthers (17-3) are the top seed in this year's six-team tournament and after a first-round bye on Wednesday, will host both semifinal games this Saturday, Nov. 12, at Arold Field, and the championship match Sunday, Nov. 13. The Panthers will play in the first semifinal Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against the winner of Wednesday's opening round game between #5-seed Wheaton College (10-8) and #4-seed Bridgewater State University (12-6).
Second-seed University of New England (18-3) will play the second semifinal Saturday against the winner of Wednesday's game between #6-seed Worcester State University (10-8) and #3-seed Mount Holyoke College (13-5). The semifinal winners will play for the title Sunday at 12 noon.
PSU is the defending ECAC New England champion and competing in the ECAC Tournament for the eighth time in the past nine years. The third-seeded Panthers upset top-seeded Bridgewater State to claim last year's title, 2-1, and lost in the championship game the previous two years.
Led by 12th-year head coach Bonnie Lord, PSU received the ECAC berth after finishing in second place in the Little East Conference with a 10-1 mark. The Panthers were defeated in the LEC Championship game by Keene State, 2-0. PSU had two seven-game winning streaks this season.
PSU is making its 16th overall ECAC post-season appearance. The Panthers' previous selections came in 1983, '85, '86, '87, '90, '95, '96, '97, '03, '04, '05, '07, '08, '09, and '10 with their three championships coming in 1987, 2004, and 2010.
