Field Hockey downs WestConn in LEC opener

Kenison-Marvin scores twice to lead Panthers

DANBURY, Conn. – Freshman Leah Kenison-Marvin (Center Tuftonboro, N.H./Kingswood) scored a pair of goals Saturday afternoon, helping lift visiting Plymouth State University to a 4-1 field hockey victory over Western Connecticut State University at The WAC. The game's start was delayed 40 minutes due to a Tornado Warning.

Sophomores Kristen Morris (Stoughton, Mass.) and Emily Davis (Boscawen, N.H.) also tallied goals for PSU as the Panthers improved to 2-1 overall (1-0 LEC).  WestConn slipped to 2-2 and 0-1.  Kenison-Marvin has six goals on the season for PSU, all in the last two games.

Kenison-Marvin put the Panthers on the scoreboard in the seventh minute when she finished off a short pass from junior Jackie Morin (Scarborough, Maine) in the mouth of the cage for her fifth goal of the season.  The Colonials knotted the game at 1-1 when Victoria Vitale (West Milford, N.J.) notched her third goal of the season, receiving a pass from Deanne Mastrocola (Goshen, Conn.) and sneaking it by the keeper.

It was the last goal PSU senior goalie Hilary Lemelin (Milan, N.H.) would yield as she would go on to make five saves on the day.  Morris tallied an unassisted marker, her third of the season, and Kenison-Marvin added her second of the game to make it 3-1 at halftime.  Davis added an insurance goal with 11:36 left in the game, as she finished off a flurry of Plymouth State shots with her first goal of the season.

Western goalies split time with Courtney Hearn (New Fairfield, Conn.) making two saves over the first 35 minutes and freshman Kaeley DeNegre (North Branford, Conn.) making four saves before the Colonials opted for the extra player for the final 5:38.

PSU is back in action Tuesday at Granite State rival New England College, while the Colonials play host to Ramapo College on Wednesday.
