Panthers remain unbeaten in Little East play
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Junior Lauren Carroll (Rollinsford, N.H.) scored three goals and senior Olivia Colborn (Lancaster, NH) added two Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State University erupted for five first-half goals and held on for a 5-2 victory over Westfield State University in Little East Conference field hockey action.
PSU improved to 3-0 in the conference and 5-2 overall, while Westfield, playing its third game in five days, is 1-2 and 4-3.
Playing for the first time in six days, Plymouth State totally dominated the first half, outshooting Westfield, 12-1. In addition to its five goals, the Panthers also had an unsuccessful penalty stroke in the first half.
Carroll got the Panthers on the scoreboard 2:20 into the game following a penalty corner, and Colburn followed with goals in the ninth and 16th minutes. Colburn has a team-high seven goals this season. Carroll, who has six goals this season, capped the scoring barrage with goals late in the half. Credited with assists on two of the five goals was junior Jackie Morin (Scarborough, Maine).
The Owls regrouped in the second half and scored twice to trail 5-2 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the game. Kelly Kenney (Suffield, Conn.) scored both goals with assists from Liz Hall (Southwick, Mass.). Hall continued her stellar play and now has nine assists this season, including five helpers in the past two games.
Plymouth State outshot Westfield, 7-4, in the second half for a 19-5 overall advantage. The Panthers dominated the penalty corners, 14-2.
The Panthers return home for two LEC games this coming week, including a Wednesday afternoon affair against rival Keene State College.
