Colborn leads PSU Field Hockey past Salem State

Panther senior explodes for five goals in key LEC win

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Olivia Colborn (Lancaster, N.H.) exploded for five goals Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University field hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Salem State University in a Little East Conference match-up at Arold Field.

Colborn scored the first four goals of the game, all in the first 21 minutes, as PSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead.  She added her fifth of the game and team-leading 14th of the season early in the second half to extend the lead.  The Panthers finished with an 18-2 margin in shots and improved to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the Little East while Salem State fell to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

The outburst also gives Colborn 47 goals in her career, jumping her from fifth to third on PSU's career goal scoring list, one goal behind Terry Galley (1981-84).

Colborn knocked in a rebound of a shot by sophomore Nikki Garvey (Canaan, N.H.) in the 14th minute to put the Panthers on the board.  She tallied her second goal two minutes later, beating the goal to the bottom right after receiving a pass from sophomore Sam Carberry (Shrewsbury, Pa.).  Garvey set up the third goal, carrying the ball downfield and feeding Colborn near the left post for her third of the game.  A little over a minute later, Colborn was at it again, scoring on a breakaway to put PSU up, 4-0, at halftime.

Salem State finally got on the board three minutes into the second half when sophomore Nicole Bisbee (Templeton, Mass.) received a pass from freshman Kathleen Clark (Southboro, Mass.) and knocked the ball into the bottom left part of the goal.

Colborn scored her fifth of the game on a rebound in the 52nd minute, and sophomore Emily Davis (Boscawn, N.H.) rounded out the Panther scoring with a goal five minutes later.  Sophomore Kelsey Russell (Arlington, Mass.) added a late goal for the Vikings with three minutes remaining.

PSU is home again on Wednesday, hosting Framingham State in an LEC contest at 3:30 p.m.  Salem State visits Bridgewater State for an LEC game Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
