Panthers compete in playoffs for 12th time in 13 years
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University field hockey team will make its 12th post-season appearance in the past 13 years this weekend after receiving a berth Monday into the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Tournament.
The Panthers (11-7) are the No. 3 seed in this year's five-team tournament and receive a bye in Wednesday's first round. PSU will face second-seeded and rival Keene State College (15-8) this Saturday, Nov. 10, in a semifinal game at 3:00 p.m. at top-seeded Bridgewater State University. BSU (17-3) meets the winner of Wednesday's opening round game between #5-seed Anna Maria College (14-7) and #4-seed University of New England (10-9) in Saturday's first semifinal at 12 noon, and BSU will host the championship game Sunday at noon.
PSU has played in the past four ECAC New England Tournament championship games, winning the title in 2010. The Panthers were the top seed in last year's championship game but were upset by third-seeded Mount Holyoke College. Third-seeded PSU upset top-seeded Bridgewater State to claim the 2010 title.
Led by 13th-year head coach Bonnie Lord, PSU received the ECAC berth after finishing in fourth place in the Little East Conference with a 7-4 mark. The Panthers were defeated in the LEC semifinals game by top-seeded UMass Dartmouth, 3-2.
PSU is making its 17th overall ECAC post-season appearance, with championships coming in 1987, 2004, and 2010. The Panthers competed in the tournament four times in the 1980s, four times in the 1990s, and eight times in the past nine years.
