Wilder, Garvey lead Panthers with strong scoring
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Plymouth State University field hockey season got off to a strong start Saturday afternoon as the Panthers defeated SUNY Brockport, 4-0, in the second game of Springfield College's Dottie Zenaty Invitational at Stagg Field.
Host Springfield knocked off Husson University, 2-1, in the first game Saturday, setting up a Plymouth State-Springfield dual in Sunday's championship game at 1:15 p.m. Brockport will play Husson in the consolation game at 11:00 a.m.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Wilder (Framingham, Mass.) and senior Nikki Garvey (Canaan, N.H.) provided the offense for the Panthers, Wilder with two goals and one assist and Garvey with a goal and two assists. They led a Panther charge that out-shot the Golden Eagles 26-8.
Plymouth State freshman goalkeeper Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.J.) earned the shutout, recording three saves.
Sophomore Kendal Lariviere (Dover, N.H.) got the Panthers off to a quick start scoring 3:14 into the game off a crossing pass from Garvey. Plymouth State extended its lead two minutes later when Wilder found Garvey on the left side post for a tap-in goal.
Wilder scored her first of the game with 9:49 left in regulation, after controlling a rebound ona save by Eagles goalkeeper Lindsey Farrell (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) off a shot from Garvey. Wilder continued the push, scoring her second goal of the contest with 6:27 left in play. Wilder controlled the ball from 10 yards out, made a move past Farrell, and finished into an empty net.
