Two second-half goals by Davis lift Panthers to LEC win
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior Emily Davis (Boscawen, N.H./ Merrimack Valley) scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the game Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State University rallied for a 3-2 comeback victory over Westfield State University in Little East Conference field hockey action at Alumni Field.
PSU scored three second-half goals to erase two deficits. The Panthers improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Little East while Westfield falls to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Davis tallied the final two goals with less than nine minutes remaining, including the game winner in the 64th minute when she deflected a shot drove by classmate Kristen Morris (Stoughton, Mass.). She notched the tying goal in the 62nd minute, with an assist from sophomore Kaitlyn Wilder (Framingham, Mass.).
Meg Doherty (Mansfield, Mass.) led the Owls' offensive attack with two goals of her own. The first came off an Emily Williams (Deerfield, Mass.) corner via Kelsey Carpenter (Barre, Mass.), marking the only tally of the first half.
Plymouth State senior Sam Carberry (Shrewsbury, Pa.) evened the score less than two minutes into the second half with an unassisted goal. Doherty responded with her second goal, blasting a shot from the top of the circle that found the upper left corner and gave Westfield a 2-1 edge. Davis took over from there for PSU.
Plymouth State freshman goalkeeper Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.J.) made two saves, whil Owl goalie Megan Fountaine (Scituate, Mass.) turned away five of PSU's 17 shots.
The Panthers return home to host rival Keene State on Tuesday in a key LEC game at Arold Field (4:00 p.m.) Westfield State returns to Little East action Tuesday at Bridgewater State for a 7:00 p.m. start.
