Coach Lord registers 200th career victory for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Nikki Garvey (Canaan, N.H.) scored a pair of goals Saturday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to a 5-2 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference field hockey game at Arold Field.
The Panthers had a 3-1 lead at halftime but Eastern cut the margin to one with 21 minutes remaining in the second half. Garvey prevented any Warrior momentum with her second of the game and ninth of the season a minute and a half later to push the lead back up to two goals.
PSU went on to the win to improve to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Little East while Eastern Conn. had a two-game win streak stopped and fell to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
The outcome also marked career victory No. 200 for head coach Bonnie Lord, who is in her 15th season at PSU. Lord (left) is now 200-89, becoming the 22nd active coach and 37th coach in NCAA Division III history to reach the 200-win milestone.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Wilder (Framingham, Mass.) scored the first goal of the game for PSU in the 14th minute off a penalty corner, making a move around a defender at the top of the circle and firing the ball through traffic in front of the net for her sixth of the season. Garvey scored her first of the game in the 16th minute on a penalty stroke to make it 2-0.
PSU pushed the lead to 3-0 with five minutes to go in the first half on a goal by senior Kristen Morris (Stoughton, Mass.) on a rebound after two good saves by Eastern, one by sophomore goalie Samantha Scavo (Redding, Conn.) and one by junior defender Jessica Oliveira (Danbury, Conn.)
Eastern got on the scoreboard just a split second before the halftime horn sounded as junior Laura Chicorka (Enfield, Conn.) send a ball toward the net that deflected off a Panther defender.
The Warriors cut the lead to 3-2 in the 49th minute when sophomore MaryKate Custer (South Windsor, Conn.) converted a pass from the right wing by freshman Alex Kallgren (Dudley, Mass.) Garvey answered right back for PSU to push the margin back up to two goals, and senior Emily Davis (Boscawen, N.H.) finished off the scoring with a goal with 15 minutes remaining.
Freshman keeper Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.J.) made two saves to earn the win in the Panther goal. Scavo finished with nine saves for Eastern.
PSU plays its next three games on the road, beginning Wednesday with an LEC match at the University of Southern Maine (4:00 p.m.) Eastern returns home to host the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Wednesday in an LEC affair (4:00 p.m.)
