Burgess scores twice to lead Panthers; Bates leads team to shutout
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Plymouth State University field hockey season got off to a strong start Saturday afternoon as the Panthers defeated SUNY Brockport, 3-0, in the second game of Springfield College's Dottie Zenaty Invitational at Stagg Field.
Junior Nicole Burgess (Mexico, Maine) scored two goals to lead the way for the Panthers. Sophomore goalkeeper Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.J.) made three saves in 66 and a half minutes to lead to the team shutout. PSU blanked Brockport in last year's season opener at Springfield, 4-0.
PSU had an 11-5 advantage in the first half but the game remained scoreless. Burgess put the Panthers on the board in the 56th minute with an unassisted goal, and doubled the margin a little more than three minutes later with an assist from junior Kendal Lariviere (Dover, N.H.). Junior Rosalie Edmonds (Goffstown, N.H.) tacked on the final goal with less than five minutes remaining.
Plymouth State will meet host Springfield for the tournament title Sunday at 1:15 p.m. The Pride blanked the University of Southern Maine in Saturday's first game, 3-0.
