Burgess & Davis each tally one to lead Panthers
NEW HAMPTON, N.H. – Sophomore Lily Davis (Boscawen, N.H.) scored to break a 1-1 tie with 7:49 remaining in the second half Saturday afternoon to lift the Plymouth State University field hockey team past Fitchburg State University, 2-1, in the Little East Conference opener at the New Hampton School Field.
Fitchburg State outshot PSU 8-2 in the first half, but sophmore goaltender Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.J.) kept the Panthers in the game with three first-half saves. Sophomore Nicole Burgess (Mexico, Maine) broke the scoreless tie, firing a shot past Fitchburg State goalkeeper Judith Valentin (Brockton, M.A.) with just 1:18 remaining in the half.
The two teams battled for over 15 minutes in the second half without any score. Fitchburg State forward Erin Morrissey (Hubbardson, M.A.) put away a quick pass from Molly Richard (Leominster, M.A.) to even things up 1-1 with 14 minutes left in the contest.
Davis took things into her own hands on a 2-on-1 breakaway, firing an outside shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal cage to give PSU the lead.
Fitchburg State furiously tried to even the score but PSU's defense kept the ball out of play for the remaining six minutes. The Falcons held a 15-7 advantage in shots but the Panthers held the lead in penalty corners 9-6.
The Panthers are back in action Tuesday against Castleton State beginning at 6:30PM. The two teams will resume their game from last week which was suspended due to lightning. The game will be held at The New Hampton School.
