Burgess continues scoring streak with two more goals for Panthers
NEW HAMPTON, N.H. – Sophomore Abigail Dunn (Gardiner, Maine) scored two goals, including the go-ahead goal in the 53rd minute, as Thomas College rallied to defeat Plymouth State University, 3-2, in non-conference field hockey action at the New Hampton School field.
Dunn scored her first of the game in the first minute of play, but PSU junior Nicole Burgess (Mexico, Maine) scored a pair of goals two minutes apart to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead with just seven minutes gone by. Burgess had a chance to tack on another goal late in the half but Thomas senior Brooklyn Curry (Belfast, Maine) made a defensive save along the goal line.
PSU maintained the advantage until midway through the second half. Thomas evened the score in the 52nd minute when Curry set up junior Erica Blake (Norridgewock, Maine) for a goal, and Dunn pounded home her second of the game a minute and a half later and that proved to be the difference in the game.
Burgess now has scored in four straight games for PSU, and has seven goals in PSU's six games this season.
Junior goalie Abbie Charrier (Waldo, Maine) made nine saves to earn the win in goal for Thomas. Sophomore Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.H.) finished with five saves in the Panther net.
PSU, 4-2 overall, returns to Little East Conference action Saturday, hosting Bridgewater State University at 11:30 a.m. at the New Hampton School field. Thomas, 3-4, plays again Wednesday at Bates College at 7:00 p.m.
