Newhard earns weekly recognition for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – A freshman on the Plymouth State University field hockey team was recognized by the Little East Conference (LEC) Monday with a top weekly honor for her performance in a pair of Panther victories last week.
Freshman defender Patty Newhard (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) was named LEC Field Hockey Rookie of the Week. Newhard was a key player as the Panthers went 2-0 on the week with a pair of one-goal LEC victories.
A 5'10" center back, Newhard led a Panther defense to a 1-0 double-overtime shutout victory over the University of Southern Maine on Thursday and a 3-2 road triumph Saturday at Western Connecticut State University. She helped the Panthers limit Southern Maine to just three shots in the whitewash, then assisted on the game-winning goal in the 65th minute in the victory over Western Conn.
The Panthers, 7-2 overall and 5-0 in the LEC, have won three in a row and six of their last seven games. PSU is tied for first place in the LEC with Keene State College as the only two teams undefeated in conference play. Plymouth State hosts Salem State Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at The New Hampton School, and visits Worcester State University Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
