Wakefield nets a pair as Panthers cruise to LEC victory
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The Plymouth State University field hockey team built a six goal lead in the first half, then cruised to a 7-1 victory over Framingham State University in Little East Conference (LEC) action Saturday afternoon.
Plymouth State was in control from the onset, outshooting the Rams 22-0 in the first half while building the 6-0 lead. Freshman Haley Wakefield (South Paris, Maine) opened the scoring just a minute into the game, and added a second goal at the 9:20 mark. Sandwiched between the Wakefield goals was a score from junior Patty Newhard (South Dennis, Mass.).
Sophomores Keeley Bartolini (Topsham, Maine) and Kaihley Rafferty (Salem, Conn.) got into the action, both scoring goals off assists from senior Lily Davis (Boscawen, N.H.) and senior Katie Martin (Waterbury Center, Vt.) added the sixth goal in the 35th minute.
Senior Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.J.) earned the win in goal for PSU, moving to 5-1 on the season after not facing a shot through the first 35 minutes. Freshman Jessica Distler (Brookfield, N.H.) and Molly Henne (Reading, Vt.) split time in goal in the second half to finish out the win.
Davis got on the board with an unassisted goal in the 56th minute to push the lead to 7-0 before Gina Bellevue put the Rams on the board five minutes later.
PSU outshot the Rams 28-4 and attempted 16 penalty corners to the Rams one.
The Panthers will host in-state rival Keene State College on Tuesday (Sept. 19) at New Hampton School. Game time for the LEC matchup is set for 7:00 p.m.
