Panthers coming off 11th-straight double-digit win season
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – With the 2018 Plymouth State University field hockey campaign just a few weeks away, head coach Bonnie Lord has announced the upcoming season schedule.
Lord is no stranger to success, having led the Panthers to double-digit wins in 17 of her previous 18 seasons at the helm. The Panthers look to continue that streak as they prepare to play a 16-game regular season schedule, including 12 Little East Conference (LEC) contests.
For the second straight year PSU opens the season at the Caryl Newhof Classic at Smith College. Last year the Panthers were nipped, 1-0, by the hosts in the opener before cruising past UMaine Farmington in the consolation game. This year Plymouth State will face defending champion SUNY Cortland on day one (Sept. 1, 2:30 p.m.). The championship and consolation games will take place on Sept. 2.
PSU will settle in for a string of four consecutive Little East Conference (LEC) home games to be played at the New Hampton School. Plymouth hosts Bridgewater State (Sept. 8, 12:00 p.m.), Framingham State (Sept. 14, 7:00 p.m.), Fitchburg State (Sept. 19, 6:00 p.m.) and Western Connecticut State (Sept. 22, 11:00 a.m.) during the stretch. Last fall the Panthers went a perfect 4-0 against those schools, outscoring them by an 18-2 margin.
Plymouth State closes the month of September with two more LEC contests, traveling to the newest member of the conference, Castleton, on Sept. 25 (7:00 p.m.) and visiting Eastern Connecticut State on Sept. 29 (12:00 p.m.).
The Panthers host Salem State to wrap up a string of seven straight league games on Oct. 3 (7:00 p.m.), before a non-conference tilt at Thomas College on Oct. 6 (12:00 p.m.). PSU is right back in league play on Oct. 9 (7:00 p.m.), traveling to UMass Dartmouth. Last fall PSU topped the Corsairs, 4-2, in the first round of the LEC Tournament.
Plymouth plays host to LEC and in-state rival Keene State on Oct. 13 (11:00 a.m.). The Owls have ended PSU's tournament run in the semifinals each of the last two seasons.
PSU visits LEC foes Southern Maine on Oct. 17 (4:00 p.m.) and Westfield State on Oct. 19 (7:00 p.m.), ahead of the final regular season home game against St. Joseph's of Maine on Oct. 22 (4:00 p.m.). The team closes out the regular season with a league contest at Worcester State on Oct. 27 (12:00 p.m.).
The eight-team LEC Tournament will open with first round matches on Oct. 30 with the top four seeds serving as hosts. The top remaining seed will host a Final Four format, with semifinals set for Nov. 2 and the championship game slated for Nov. 3.
