Wakefield named Offensive Player of the Week
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – After singlehandedly leading the Plymouth State University field hockey team to a 3-0 win over Westfield State University on Saturday, junior Haley Wakefield (Norway, Maine.) has earned Little East Conference (LEC) weekly recognition by being named the Offensive Player of the Week.
Wakefield notched her second career hat trick to lead the Panthers to a 3-0 win over Westfield State in the regular season finale. She gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the second quarter, then scored twice in the final two minutes to secure the win. Her three goals came on just four shots.
This season Wakefield has been a crucial part of a Plymouth State offense that has averaged 1.60 goals per game. Strong play on both sides of the ball has helped the Panthers secure the seventh seed in the LEC Tournament.
Wakefield leads the team with eight goals and is tied with sophomore Jess Mezquita (Atkinson, N.H.) for the team-lead in points with 18. Wakefield would likely have an even higher total had she not been forced to miss three games this season. She boasts a .205 shooting percentage that ranks seventh in the conference among players who have taken at least 30 shots.
Plymouth State (8-9, 6-6 LEC) begins its postseason run this week, heading to rival Keene State, the number two seed, for a first round clash on Tuesday (Nov. 5) at 6:30 p.m. The Panthers beat Keene by a 3-2 margin earlier this season.
