PSC Men's Basketball downs Western Conn

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Tony Martinez (Barnstead, NH) registered career-highs with 21 points and 12 rebounds Saturday to lead the Plymouth State College's men's basketball team to an 86-71 Little East Conference victory over Western Connecticut State University at Foley Gymnasium.

Martinez connected on nine of 18 field goal attempts, scoring 12 of his 21 points in the first half as the Panthers led 38-32 at the break. The young power forward also contributed one assist, one blocked shot and two steals in the best performance of his career.

PSC ran away with the game in the second half, extending its lead to 20 points with seven minutes remaining (68-48) and cruising to the win from there. The win capped a 3-0 week for the Panthers, improving them to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the LEC. Western Connecticut falls to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

The Panthers take a four-game winning streak into an important home game Wednesday (Jan. 27) against arch-rival Keene State (7:30 p.m.). The Owls are unbeaten this season in conference play, and are ranked #2 in the latest Division III New England poll.

Martinez was one of four Panthers to score in double figures Saturday. Senior Eric McQueen (Lawrence, MA) hit 8-of-16 field goal attempts and finished with 19 points, senior Adam DeChristopher (Brockton, MA) added 12 points, and junior Shannon Gallagher (Plymouth, NH) came off the bench to contribute 10 points and six assists. DeChristopher has scored in double figures in 31 consecutive PSC outings, dating back to last season.

The Colonials got solid production out of Juma Jones (Hartford, CT). The senior center registered team-highs with 16 points and eight rebounds, and hit seven of his 11 field goal tries. Sophomore Kejuan McCall (Hartford, CT) and freshman Leonard Rinas (Bristol, CT) provided offense off the bench, McCall scoring 12 points and Rinas adding 10.

The Colonials host Eastern Connecticut Tuesday (Jan. 26) at 7:30 p.m.
