PSC Men's Hoop hands Keene State 1st LEC Loss
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College's men's basketball team handed Keene State College its first Little East Conference loss of the season Wednesday night with an 87-84 last-minute victory before nearly 1,000 fans at Foley Gymnasium.
The Panthers got 18 points from sophomore Tony Martinez (Barnstead, NH) and 17 points and eight assists from senior Adam DeChristopher (Brockton, MA). Senior Eric McQueen (Lawrence, MA) added 13 points for PSC, and senior Jamal Pettiford-Jones (Portsmouth, NH) contributed 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Keene State sophomore Chris Coates (Hampton, NH) led all scorers with 23 points to lead the Owls attack. Senior Jamie Smith (Colchester, VT) and sophomore Fred Fieldhouse (Somers, CT) each scored 12 points for the Owls.
Plymouth State, tied for sixth in this week's NCAA Division III New England poll, improved to 12-4 overall and 6-2 in the LEC. Keene State, top-ranked in this week's New England Division III poll, remains in first place in the conference but drops to 14-3 overall and 7-1 in the LEC.
The Panthers are coached by Jim Ferry, a 1990 Keene State graduate, while Keene State is coached by Phil Rowe, a 1974 PSC graduate and former coach of the Panthers (1985-90).
After trailing most of the first half, Keene State took a 47-46 lead into the locker room at the break. PSC took a nine-point lead midway through the second half (69-60), but Keene State stormed back with a 10-0 run to take a 70-69 lead with 6:48 remaining.
DeChristopher scored nine of his team's 18 points the rest of the way, including a key three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining that gave the Panthers a 85-81 advantage. KSC's Fieldhouse answered with a three-pointer of his own, but the Owls could get no closer. Todd Steffanides (Fitchburg, MA) hit a pair of free throws with six seconds left to seal the win for PSC.
PSC plays at home again Saturday (Jan. 30) with a LEC contest against R.I. Island College (3:00 p.m.).
