PLYMOUTH, NH - For the fourth time this season, the leading scorer on the Plymouth State College men's basketball team has been honored by the Little East Conference for his outstanding play.
Junior forward Tony Martinez (Barnstead, NH) was named to the LEC Weekly Honor Roll after helping PSC to a 1-1 week. Martinez was the LEC Player of the Week once last month, and has been on the Weekly Honor Roll three other times.
A 6'3" forward, Martinez averaged 23.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two games, a 97-90 overtime loss at New England College last Thursday and a 70-52 LEC victory over Rhode Island College Saturday. He shot 51.1 percent from the floor (22-of-43), matching his season high with 26 points at NEC and adding 21 vs. RIC. He has led the Panthers in scoring in eight of 10 games this season.
Martinez continues to be one of the top players in the conference. He is averaging 19.5 points (second in the LEC) and 7.7 boards (seventh), while shooting 50.6 percent from the floor (sixth).
Plymouth State, 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the LEC, plays three road games this week, including a pair of LEC contests. The Panthers are at UMass Boston Tuesday (7:30 p.m.), at Bowdoin for a non-conference affair Thursday (7:30 p.m.) and at UMass Dartmouth Saturday (3:00 p.m.) before returning home next Tuesday (Jan. 18) for a key conference battle against arch-rival Keene State (7:30 p.m.).
PANTHER NOTES: The Panthers continue to get strong performances from the freshman class. Last week's top rookie was swingman Kenny Stewart (Londonderry, NH), who averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.0 steals in the two games. He shot 66.7 percent from the floor (12-of-18), 60 percent from three-point land (3-of-5), and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (5-of-6). Stewart dished out nine assists and had no turnovers in 53 minutes. He is sixth in the LEC in assists (3.5 apg) and eighth in steals (2.0 spg). Classmate Mark Dunham (Derry, NH) canned four three-pointers in the victory over RIC. He is fourth in the conference in three-point FG percentage (.400)....Senior forward Shannon Gallagher (Plymouth, MA), who averaged 12.8 points and 8.6 rebounds for PSC last semester, remains questionable for the remainder of the season after injuring a finger while working at a lumber yard over the holiday break. He is 12th in the league in scoring, sixth in rebounding, and ninth in field goal percentage.
