Martinez Piling Up Honors For PSC Hoops

PLYMOUTH, NH - Another week, and another weekly honor for the leading scorer on the Plymouth State College men's basketball team.

For the fourth time since the turn of the millenium and the seventh time this season, PSC junior forward Tony Martinez (Barnstead, NH) was named to the Little East Conference Weekly Honor Roll for his performance in two games last week. He helped the Panthers snap a six-game losing streak with consecutive victories over Castleton State (105-75) and Rhode Island College (79-66).

A 6'3" forward, Martinez enjoyed one of the most productive weeks of his career, averaging 29.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in PSC's 2-0 week. He shot 59.1 percent from the field (26-of-44), and added two assists and a pair of steals. Martinez, who has been PSC's top scorer in the last eight games and 17 times in 20 contests this season, poured in 28 points against CSC and came back with a career-high 31 at RIC, along with matching his career-best with 13 rebounds.

Martinez has netted at least 20 points in his last seven outings, improving his season scoring average to 21.0 ppg. He is a conference Player of the Year candidate, as he also averages 8.1 rebounds and shoots 53.9 percent from the floor (178-of-330). The power forward has been the LEC Player of the Week once, and an honor roll selection six other times.

Plymouth State, 11-9 overall and 4-6 in the LEC under coach John Scheinman, plays a pair of key LEC contests this week - Tuesday (Feb. 8) at arch-rival Keene State (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday (Feb. 12) at Foley Gymnasium against UMass Boston (3:00 p.m.). PSC is still alive for a home-court berth in the opening round of the LEC play-offs, which begin on Tuesday, Feb. 22nd.
