PSC opens 2001 with win at Castleton State

CASTLETON, Vt. - Plymouth State College registered an overwhelming advantage at the free throw line Sunday and went on to open 2001 with a 93-65 non-conference men's basketball victory over Castleton State College.

The Panthers drained 25 of 27 from the charity stripe, including all 14 attempts in the first half, to help post the 28-point victory. The Spartans made just three of their 13 free throws.

PSC led by one point midway through the opening 20 minutes, but went on an 18-5 run to close out the half with a 44-30 advantage. The Panthers maintained a double-digit lead throughout most of the second half. The victory improves PSC to 6-5 on the season, while Castleton State drops to 2-7.

Senior Tony Martinez (Barnstead, N.H.) led all scorers with 20 points, hitting a pair of three-pointers and all six free throws. Sophomore guard Kenny Stewart (Londonderry, N.H.) contributed 16 points, converting three of four tries from three-point range.

Junior Jason Blackburn (Hudson, Mass.) hit all eight free throw attempts and scored 13 points for PSC while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds, and senior Warren Ostler (Morrisville, Vt.) also reached double figures with 10 points.

The Spartans were led by Scott Keefe, who hit six three-pointers and finished with 18 points, and Jeff Weld, who added 10 points.

Plymouth State returns home for three straight home games, beginning with a Little East Conference affair at Foley Gymnasium Tuesday (Jan. 9) against UMass Boston (7:30 p.m.) The Panthers will also host Bowdoin in a non-conference contest Thursday (Jan. 11) at 5:30 p.m., and UMass Dartmouth in an LEC game Sunday (Jan. 14) at 3 p.m.
