Panthers earn LEC victory over UMB

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior forward Tony Martinez (Barnstead, N.H.) scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Tuesday night, leading the Plymouth State College men's basketball team to a 93-67 Little East Conference victory over UMass Boston at Foley Gymnasium.

The win improves PSC to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in LEC play, while the Beacons drop to 6-6 and 2-2.

Trailing by eight points (39-31) with three minutes left in the first half, the Panthers went on a 12-4 run to close the half at 43-all. PSC then opened the second half with a 28-14 spurt to take a 71-57 advantage, and cruised home the rest of the way.

Martinez connected on 11 of 18 field goal attempts while hitting all eight free throws. Junior center Jason Blackburn (Hudson, Mass.) added 19 points and seven boards, converting 8-of-12 shots from the floor, and freshman forward Frankie Finklea (Dorchester, Mass.) contributed 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Beacons had four players score in double figures. Senior Mitchel Hercule (Mattapan, Mass.) led the way with 15 points, followed by sophomore Paul Kemp (Cambridge, Mass.) with 12 and freshman Lester Robinson (Roxbury, Mass.) and junior Joe Guertin (Weymouth, Mass.) with 11 apiece.

Plymouth State had a 42-31 advantage in the rebounding department, while committing just 12 turnovers to UMB's 20. PSC shot 52 percent from the field, while UMB shot just 43 percent.

PSC continues its three-game homestand Thursday (Jan. 11) at Foley Gymnasium with a non-conference tilt against Bowdoin (5:30 p.m.)
