Panthers earn LEC road win at RIC
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Tony Martinez (Barnstead, N.H.) scored a team-high 20 points and grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds Saturday to lead the Plymouth State College men's basketball team to a 71-59 Little East Conference road win at Rhode Island College.
The victory moves the Panthers back over the .500 mark at 10-9 overall and 5-4 in conference play, while RIC drops to 6-13 and 2-7.
Martinez did much of his damage on the offensive board, grabbing seven rebounds off PSC missed shots. He got offensive help from junior Larry Francoeur (Somersworth, N.H.), who came off the bench to score 14 points, and junior Jason Blackburn (Hudson, Mass.), who chipped in with 10 points.
The 20 points for Martinez gives him 1,404 for his career, moving him past Dave Long into fourth place on PSC's all-time scoring list. Long scored 1,403 from 1973-77. Martinez's next target is Dave Levesque, who scored 1,475 points from 1988-91.
Guard Ken Payette was the only RIC player to score in double figures, finishing with 21 points.
PSC led by 16 points at halftime (41-25), and maintained its double digit lead through most of the second half. The Panthers connected on only 41 percent of their shots in the game, but RIC hit at only a 39 percent clip and PSC had the rebounding advantage, 42-33.
Plymouth State returns home for a key LEC contest Tuesday (Feb. 6) at Foley Gymnasium (7:30 p.m.) against arch-rival Keene State. The Panthers will be looking to even the season series, as KSC defeated PSC in Keene, 93-89, last Sunday.
