Panthers in a rout over Eastern Conn.
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Plymouth State College opened the second half with a 28-4 scoring surge Saturday and coasted to a 94-72 Little East Conference men's basketball victory over Eastern Connecticut State University at Geissler Gymnasium.
The win improves the Panthers to 5-2 overall and evens them up at 1-1 in the conference, while Eastern drops to 3-5 and 1-1.
Leading by 11 at halftime (45-34), PSC scored the first 14 points when play resumed, holding ECSU scoreless the first six minutes. The Panthers opened up a 35-point lead (73-38) with 10:44 left in the game, and cruised home the rest of the way.
Sophomore Frankie Finklea (Dorchester, Mass.), last year's conference Rookie of the Year, led all players with 21 points, hitting 7-of-10 field goal attempts. Junior Donnelle Combs (Mitchellville, Md.) contributed 15 points and a team-high six rebounds, converting 6-of-7 field goal tries as PSC shot 51.6 percent from the floor as a team.
Freshman guard Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) finished with 13 points for the Panthers, and sophomore Ryan Chicoine (Gorham, Maine) added nine points and nine rebounds.
Sophomore Gordon Shepard (Waterbury, Conn.) led ECSU with 16 points and five assists, while senior Rich Vega (Hartford, Conn.) contributed 15 points and classmate Jason Leydon (Milford, Conn.) added 10.
Plymouth State plays its final home game of the semester this Tuesday (Dec.11), hosting Bridgewater State in a non-conference affair at Foley Gymnasium (7:00 p.m.).
