Balanced scoring leads PSC past Bridgewater

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Jason Blackburn (Hudson, Mass.) scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Tuesday evening, leading Plymouth State College to a 93-86 non-conference men's basketball victory over Bridgewater State College at Foley Gymnasium.

Blackburn, who connected on 6-of-10 field goal attempts, including 3-of-5 three-pointers, was one of four Panthers to score at least 17 points as PSC used a balanced attack to hold off the Bears. Sophomore Frankie Finklea (Dorchester, Mass.) tossed in 19 points, freshman Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) added 18, and junior Kenny Stewart (Londonderry, N.H.) contributed 17. Sophomore Ryan Chicoine (Gorham, Maine) had only six points but collected 10 rebounds and blocked six BSC shots.

PSC had to overcome an outstanding game by BSC senior Derek Savas (Lakeville, Mass.), who hit 7-of-11 shots from three-point range and finished with 35 points. Senior Harry Grabert (Milton, Mass.) added 16 points for the Bears, and sophomore Brian Adamczyk (Chicopee, Mass) contributed 10 points and nine assists.

The victory, PSC's third in a row, improves the Panthers to 6-2 overall, while Bridgewater State drops to 4-3.

The game was fairly close all the way. After trailing by 11 midway through the first half, Bridgewater State battled back to take a 74-73 advantage with 6:41 to play, the Bears' first lead since it was 13-11. It was still a one-point BSC lead (84-83) with 2:39 remaining, but Plymouth State turned up the defense and allowed only two points the rest of the way while Stewart hit a pair of jumpers, Pelotte converted four free throw attempts, and Stewart clinched the game with two from the line with 10 seconds remaining.

The Panthers complete competition for the semester this Saturday (Dec. 15) with a non-conference encounter at Johnson & Wales (3:00 p.m.).
