Bowdoin knocks off Plymouth State

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's basketball team took a 76-64 victory over Plymouth State College Thursday evening at Morrell Gymnasium. In a game that featured incredible runs by both sides, the Polar Bears move to 7-4 on the year, while the Panthers fall to 7-5.

The Polar Bears jumped ahead early on an incredible 25-4 run over the first seven minutes of the game to seemingly take an insurmountable lead. But the Panthers clawed back, going on an 18-2 run of their own to close to within 27-22 at 6:57 of the first. Bowdoin answered with another run, this time a smaller, 13-4 spurt to lead 40-26 at the break.

The Polar Bears extended the lead to as many as 22 before Plymouth State chipped away late in the contest. The Panthers cut the lead to 11, but could get no closer as the Polar Bears hung on to the victory.

Mark Gilbride scored a season-high 17 points to lead Bowdoin, while Greg Orlicz (15 points, eight rebounds), Michael Harding (14 points) and Jon Farmer (10 points, eight boards) also reached double figures for Bowdoin.

Plymouth State was led by freshman Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) and sophomore Mike Loughlin (Manchester, N.H.), both with 14 points, while senior Jason Blackburn (Hudson, Mass.) scored nine points and collected 13 rebounds.

Plymouth State continues a five-game road swing with a rare Saturday evening Little East Conference clash at Rhode Island College (8:00 p.m.).
