Panthers fall at Western Conn.

DANBURY, Conn. - Senior Kevin Matthews (Ossining, N.Y.) scored 30 points and made seven steals Saturday, leading Western Connecticut State University to a 102-76 victory over Plymouth State College in a Little East Conference men's basketball game at Feldman Arena.

The Colonials scored the first 12 points of the game, including the first 10 by Matthews, and never looked back. PSC got to within two points three times in the first half, the last one at 31-29 with six minutes to go before the break, but Western went on a 22-3 spurt and took a 53-32 lead into halftime and the Panthers never got closer than 14 points in the second half.

Western Conn., which swept the season series from PSC, improves to 14-6 overall and 6-4 in the LEC. The Panthers drop to 11-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

Greg Cole contributed 20 points for the Colonials, hitting 8-of-10 shots from the field. Casey Bock and Jay Reginatto added 12 points apiece, as Cole and Reginatto each hit 4-of-5 shots from three-point range.

The Panthers were led by junior Donnelle Combs (Mitchellville, Md.), who finished with 17 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Senior Jason Blackburn (Hudson, Mass.) scored 15 points while collecting nine rebounds, and sophomore Frankie Finklea (Dorchester, Mass.) added 12 points.

PSC outrebounded Western 57-43, but shot only 31 percent while the Colonials hit 50 percent of their shots, including 12-of-12 from three-point land.

Plymouth State returns home to host the University of Southern Maine Tuesday (Feb. 5) at Foley Gymnasium (7:30 p.m.). Tuesday's game is "Spirit Night" at Foley Gymnasium --- A full-house crowd is expected, with numerous games and prizes for PSC students and community members.
