Panthers down UMF to win tournament title
FARMINGTON, Maine - Sophomore Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) was named Most Valuable Player Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State College's men's basketball team captured the championship of the University of Maine Farmington Tournament with an 83-65 victory over the hosts in the title game.
Pelotte, who had scored a game-high 30 points in Friday's 90-77 win over Fisher College, added 14 points Saturday, playing near his hometown of Bingham.
The Panthers also got an excellent performance from senior co-captain Kenny Stewart (Londonderry, N.H.), who was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Stewart tossed in a team-high 15 points Saturday, scoring all 15 in the first half as PSC built a 25-point lead by halftime and essentially put the game away.
UMF battled back in the second half, cutting the deficit to 16 points with 3:11 to play, but it was too little, too late and PSC held on for the win.
Sophomore Anthony Oglesby (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished off a solid tournament for PSC, scoring 13 points in the championship game. He opened his Panther career Friday with a 24-point, 10-rebound effort against Fisher. Sophomore J.J. Truman (Enfield, N.H.) also reached double figures Saturday with 13 points off the Panther bench.
PSC, 2-0, returns home for its Foley Gymnasium debut this Tuesday (Nov. 26) against non-conference foe Johnson State (7:00 p.m.).
