PSC no match for Florida Gulf Coast

FT. MYERS, Fla. - Ryan Hopkins scored 37 points Tuesday afternoon to lead the Florida Gulf Coast University men's basketball team to an easy 84-48 non-conference victory over Plymouth State College at Alico Arena.

Hopkins converted nine of his 14 three-point field goal attempts and 13-of-22 overall in the winning effort. FGCU is a former NAIA school which is now playing NCAA Division II and plans to move to Division I.

PSC suffered from a poor shooting day, converting just 31 percent for the game, while committing 26 turnovers and getting outrebounded 48-33. The Panthers fell behind 41-26 at the half, and got outscored 43-22 after the break.

Sophomore Matt Budrow (Round Pond, Maine) led the Panthers with 16 points and six rebounds, making six of his seven shots. Senior Kenny Stewart (Londonderry, N.H.) contributed 12 points and a team-high eight boards. Sophomore Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine), who was leading the team with a 24.1 scoring average, was limited to one point.

In addition to Hopkins, FGCU got 14 points and seven rebounds from Roman Brown, nine points and nine boards from Robinson Tisme and 10 assists from Bryan Crislip.

The outcome gives PSC a 7-2 record heading into the New Year, while FGCU is now 9-6.

The Panthers return home to host a pair of non-conference contests next week - Tuesday (Jan. 7) against the University of New England (7 p.m.) and Thursday (Jan. 9) vs. Bowdoin (7:30 p.m.).
