Panthers pull away from Bowdoin

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) overcame a sub-par shooting night to finish with a game-high 22 points, leading Plymouth State College's men's basketball team to a 76-65 non-conference victory over Bowdoin College Thursday evening at Foley Gymnasium.

The win improves PSC to 9-2 overall, while Bowdoin drops to 5-4.

Pelotte hit only five of his 20 shots, but four came from three-point land as the Panther point guard tossed in 17 second-half points. He was instrumental in helping PSC turn a 36-36 halftime tie into an 11-point Panther victory.

PSC also got 14 points from sophomore Anthony Oglesby (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 11 from senior Kenny Stewart (Londonderry, N.H.) and 10 from junior center Ryan Chicoine (Gorham, Maine).

Bowdoin was led by senior captains Danny Ginn (Windham, Maine) and Braden Clement (Skowhegan, Maine), who scored 18 and 16 points, respectively. Freshman Kyle Petrie (Iowa City, IA) added 10 points, and sophomore Mark Yakavonis (Barrington, R.I.) collected a game-high 14 rebounds.

There were seven lead changes in the first half before the teams settled on the 36-36 deadlock at the break. The hosts pulled away in the second half, getting their first double-digit lead (60-48) on the three-pointer by Oglesby with 8:43 remaining. The Polar Bears didn't get the margin under 10 points the rest of the way.

PSC resumes Little East Conference action Saturday at Western Connecticut (3:00 p.m.). The Polar Bears will host Babson on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) in a make-up of last weekend's snowed-out contest.
