Rhode Island College nips PSC
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Johnafer White (Boston, Mass.) hit a crucial free throw with 2.2 seconds remaining Saturday to preserve an 89-86 victory for Rhode Island College over Plymouth State College in a Little East Conference men's basketball game at the RIC Intercollegiate Athletic Complex.
White finished with a team-high 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Anchormen. Junior Andre Daley (Boston, Mass.) scored 15 points, sophomore Jason Harris (Bedford, Mass.) added 13 and junior Lester Carter (Boston, Mass.) contributed 12 points in the win.
Sophomores Anthony Oglesby (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) led the Panthers with 28 points apiece. Oglesby was red-hot from the field, hitting 13-of-17 shot attempts while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds, while Pelotte was 11-of-20 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. Oglesby had cut RIC's lead to 88-86 before the Panthers fouled White.
Senior Kenny Stewart (Londonderry, N.H.) was the only other Panther to reach double figures in the scoring department, finishing with 10 points.
The outcome leaves both teams with identical records - 10-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Anchormen are dramatically improved after finishing 1-24 last season.
The Panthers return home for a Tuesday evening (7:30 p.m.) match-up against Southern Maine.
