KEENE, N.H. - Senior Kenny Stewart (Londonderry, N.H.) scored a team-high 17 points Tuesday evening as Plymouth State College pulled out a 65-62 Little East Conference victory over archrival Keene State College at Spaulding Gym.
Stewart also collected seven rebounds and handed out four assists as PSC won for the third time in a row and improved to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play. The hosts held PSC's top two scorers in check, limiting sophomore Anthony Oglesby (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to 15 points and eight rebounds and classmate Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) to 10 points, both below their season averages.
Keene State, which defeated the Panthers in three out of four meetings last season, drop to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in the LEC. The Owls were led by Chris Timson (Beverly, Mass.), who had a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Derek Swenson (Attleboro, Mass.), who finished with 13 points.
Plymouth State led the majority of the night, but the game was decided in the final minute of play. A basket by junior Ryan Chicoine (Gorham, Maine) gave PSC a 63-60 lead, but Timson answered with a reverse lay-up to bring the Owls back to within one. Chicoine added a pair of free throws to make it a three-point game again, 65-62.
The Owls still had their chances, but missed a three-point attempt that would've tied the game, and then couldn't get another shot off in the closing moments.
Free throws were a key in the game, as PSC drained 13-of-17 and the Owls were just 16-of-29. The Panthers shot 41 percent from the field in the contest, while KSC was successful at a 34 percent clip.
PSC plays another LEC road game Saturday at Eastern Connecticut (3:00 p.m.), while Keene State hosts Southern Maine (3:00 p.m.).
