Panthers come back to down UMB

BOSTON, Mass. - Plymouth State College outscored the University of Massachusetts Boston 13-3 over the last six minutes Saturday, holding the Beacons scoreless in the final 2:31, and the Panthers went on to a 67-58 Little East Conference men's basketball victory at UMB's Clark Athletic Center.

PSC, which overcame a 17-point first-half deficit, won for the seventh time in its last eight outings to improve to 17-5 overall and 9-3 in the conference. Upset-minded UMB falls to 11-12 overall and 5-7 in LEC play.

Three players scored in double figures for Plymouth State, all off the bench. Junior Ryan Chicoine (Gorham, Maine) had 12 points and six rebounds, junior Mike Loughlin (Manchester, N.H.) added 11 points, and senior Donnelle Combs (Mitchellville, Md.) chipped in with 10.

Sophomores Billy Allen (South Boston, Mass.) and Roger Perry (Roxbury, Mass.) led the Beacons with 14 points apiece. Classmates Roderic Joseph (Dorchester, Mass.) and Jurvon Wallace (Lynn, Mass.) each added 11 points for UMB.

The Beacons stormed out of the gate, taking a 19-2 lead eight minutes into the contest. The Panthers battled back, cutting the margin to four points (25-21) with five minutes left in the first half before heading to the locker room trailing by nine (37-28).

The Panthers got their first lead (42-41) with 14 minutes on the second-half clock. The teams traded several baskets over the next 10 minutes, and it was a three-point PSC lead (61-58) with 2:31 to play. UMD didn't score again, though, missing all six shots and turning the ball over twice. PSC sealed the win by making six of eight free throws down the stretch.

The Panthers return home for a key LEC encounter Tuesday against Keene State (7:30 p.m.). PSC is in second place in the LEC at 9-3 in conference play, and KSC is in third at 8-4. The Beacons are back in action Tuesday at Southern Maine.
