BABSON PARK, Mass. - Plymouth State University jumped out to a 22-9 lead and never looked back Friday night, and the Panthers went on to post a 101-52 victory over Mount Ida in the opening round of the 2003 Babson Invitational Men's Basketball Tournament presented by Irving Oil.
The Panthers will face the hosts in Saturday's 3:00 p.m. championship game. Babson held off Colby-Sawyer College, 67-62, in Friday's other first round match-up.
Junior Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) led the Panther scoring parade against Mount Ida, scoring 21 points (on 8-of-11 shooting) in just 18 minutes. Junior Anthony Oglesby (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 12 points, 11 rebounds and four steals.
After taking a 51-23 lead by halftime, the Panthers were able to give nearly everyone playing time, as 16 players were on the court for at least six minutes each and no one played more than 21 minutes.
Other notable performances were made by freshman Devin Ruocco (Dover, N.H.), who made three three-pointers to finish with nine points; Sophomore center Kevin Boutilier (North Andover, Mass.), who had eight points and six rebounds in 14 minutes; Freshman Andreas Pope (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who finished with eight points and four boards in 10 minutes; and sophomore Pete Hutchins (New London, N.H.), who ended up with a team-high seven assists.
Josh Didick led the Mustangs with 11 points and eight rebounds, the only Mount Ida player to score in double figures.
Babson defeated Plymouth State two years ago, 82-73, in the championship game of the Babson Tournament. The Panthers captured the UMaine Farmington season-opening tourney last season.
