PSU Men’s Hoop coasts past Tufts

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University's men's basketball team matched its best start in six years Tuesday evening, improving to 6-0 with a 91-56 non-conference victory over Tufts University at Foley Gymnasium.

The Panthers did not trail in the contest, taking an 11-4 lead less than five minutes into the game and never looking back. PSU scored 15 unanswered points midway through the first half to take a 26-7 lead, settled for a 25-point advantage (46-21) at the break, and maintained a 30 or 40 point lead throughout the second half.

PSU, which has scored at least 87 points in all six contests this season, used a balanced offensive attack to defeat Tufts. Senior Mike Loughlin (Manchester, N.H./West) led all scorers with 15 points, hitting 6-of-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range. Senior Ryan Chicoine (Gorham, Maine) contributed 14 points (on 5-of-7 shooting), freshman Andreas Pope (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 13 points (on 6-of-9 shooting) and eight boards, and junior Anthony Oglesby (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The lopsided contest allowed PSU to utilize the entire bench, as all 18 players on the roster saw playing time and no one played as many as 20 minutes. Junior Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine), PSU's leading scorer with 23.6 points per game, was limited to eight points in 18 minutes.

Tufts, 2-5, had only one player score in double figures, as senior Deyvehn East (Greenfield, Mass.) finished with 13 points.

Plymouth State plays its first Little East Conference game of the season this Saturday at Foley Gymnasium against UMass Dartmouth (3:00 p.m.). Tufts is done for the semester, returning to action on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at UMass Boston (7:00 p.m.).
