PSU Mens Hoop holds off Rhode Island College
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) scored 26 points Saturday afternoon to help Plymouth State University get back on track with an 83-73 victory over Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference men's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.
Pelotte, who finished with at least 20 points for the first time in nine games, hit 8-of-15 from the field, including half of his four three-point attempts. He helped the Panthers, who had dropped two in a row after winning 13 of their first 14, improve to 14-3 overall and 5-2 in the LEC, while RIC has dropped four of its last five to dip to 6-11 and 3-4.
The Panthers also got 17 points and 11 rebounds from junior Anthony Oglesby (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and 16 points from senior Mike Loughlin (Manchester, N.H./West), who hit a pair of three-pointers and all 10 free throws.
RIC had an extremely balanced offensive effort. Sophomore Brian Stanko (Swansea, Mass.) finished with a team-high 11 points, and four others, seniors Kamran Alemdar (Stockholm, Sweden) and Lester Carter (Boston, Mass.) and freshmen Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, Maine) and Kamari Williams (Springfield, Mass.), all scored 10 points.
It was a tight game throughout the first half until RIC pulled ahead by nine (38-29) before clinging to a 38-33 halftime advantage. The Panthers then rattled off 18 straight points early in the second half, seven from Loughlin, six from Pelotte and five from Oglesby, to take a 13-point lead (59-46) with 13 minutes to play.
RIC held tight, coming back to within one point of the Panthers three times, the last time (68-67) with three minutes remaining, but PSU made 13 of 14 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Plymouth State was outrebounded 39-28, but shot 54 percent for the game while holding RIC to a 43.3 shooting percentage.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. PSU travels to Southern Maine and RIC returns home to host Western Connecticut.
