PSU Men’s Basketball captures 20th win of season

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Anthony Oglesby (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 19 of his game-high 22 points in the first half Tuesday night, and Plymouth State University went on to post a 92-65 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference men's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.

The win is PSU's fifth in a row and seventh in the last eight outings as the Panthers improve to 20-4 overall and 10-3 in the LEC. Plymouth State has locked up second place in the LEC regular season race, and will have home-court advantage in the first round of next week's LEC Tournament. Southern Maine drops to 8-16 overall and 2-11 in conference play.

Oglesby connected on 6-of-9 field goals and 7-of-10 free throws in the opening 20 minutes to help the Panthers to a 49-31 advantage at the break. He also collected eight of his game-high 10 rebounds in the first half, and ended up with 22 points and 10 boards for his ninth double-double of the season.

PSU scored the first nine points of the game and led 13-2 seven minutes into the contest. The visitors were within seven points (36-29) with 4:30 to play in the opening half, but Plymouth State ended the frame with another 13-2 spurt to take a 49-31 advantage into the locker room. PSU pulled away in the second half, going up by 21 points (62-41) with 13 minutes to play before emptying the bench and coasting home the rest of the way.

Sophomore Kevin Boutilier (North Andover, Mass.) and freshman Andreas Pope (Brooklyn, N.Y.) provided strong support off the Panther bench, Boutilier finishing with a season-high 17 points and five rebounds and Pope adding 15 points and six boards. PSU also got 14 points from senior guard Mike Loughlin (Manchester, N.H.), while senior center Ryan Chicoine (Gorham, Maine) played excellent defense with a career-high seven blocked shots, six in the first half.

The Huskies had just one player score in double figures as junior Ryan Garland (Hermon, Maine) finished with 16 points.

Plymouth State reached the 20-win plateau for the fifth time in school history, and the first time during the regular season. The Panthers previously won at least 20 games in 1988-89 (20-7), 1993-94 (20-10), 1998-99 (22-8) and 2002-03 (21-8).

Both teams complete the regular season at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, PSU hosting Western Connecticut and USM entertaining UMass Dartmouth.
