PSU Men’s Basketball rallies to defeat Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. - Plymouth State University rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit Sunday evening and pulled out a 78-75 victory over Rivier College in a non-conference men's basketball game.

Junior forwards Andreas Pope (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Mike Walcek (Dover, N.H.) did much of the damage for Plymouth State. Pope finished with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds, scoring nine key points in the second half, and Walcek finished with 12 points, including the last six for PSU and seven of the last 11 down the stretch.

PSU also got 17 points and six rebounds from senior center Kevin Boutilier (North Andover, Mass.) and 14 points from senior guard Mark Dunham (Salem, N.H./Pinkerton), including four three-pointers.

Jeff McMahon led all scorers with 23 points for Rivier, while Jeff Carpenter added 16 points and 11 rebounds and Brice Stice contributed 15 points.

Rivier exploded in the first half and held a 47-29 lead at the intermission. The Panthers roared back, led by Pope and Walcek, and took a 70-68 lead with less than four minutes remaining.

John McMahon hit a three as the Raiders reclaimed the lead, 71-70. It was tied 72-72 with 1:20 left when the Panthers took the lead for good on a Walcek jumper.

Rivier had one last chance to tie it when Stice rimmed out a three-point attempt at the buzzer. The Raiders are now 2-2 on the season.

PSU, 2-0, will be back in action Tuesday at the annual Jacob's Bridge Through Autism Classic, hosted by New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord. The Panthers will face New England College in the first game (5:30 p.m.), followed by the Keene State vs. Colby-Sawyer game (7:30 p.m.)
