Keene State rallies to down PSU Men’s Hoop

KEENE, N.H. - The Keene State College men's basketball team outscored rival Plymouth State University 51-36 in the second half Tuesday evening to post an 80-70 come-from-behind Little East Conference victory at Spaulding Gym.

KSC snaps its two-game conference losing streak and improves to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the LEC. The Owls maintain a share of the conference lead with UMass-Boston, which defeated Southern Maine in overtime on Tuesday. Plymouth State saw its three-game winning streak come to an end, dropping to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in league play.

The Owls had four players score in double-figures. Senior Sean Sullivan (Athol, Mass.) led the team with 18 points, freshman Tyler Kathan (Ludlow, Vt.) and sophomore Matt Hickey (Mahoipac, N.Y.) added 15 points each, and sophomore David Sontag (Mont Vernon, N.H.) finished with 11. Senior Ben Maynard (Nobleboro, Maine) and Sontag led the Owls with 10 rebounds each.

Junior Mike Walcek (Dover, N.H.) led the Panthers with 14 points, while senior guards Brandon Boggs (Strafford, N.H.) and Mark Dunham (Salem, N.H.) added 11 points each. Looking to reach the 1,000-point plateau, senior Kevin Boutilier (North Andover, Mass.) finished with four points - 17 points shy of the mark.

Trailing by five at the intermission, KSC began the second half on a 15-5 run highlighted by consecutive three-pointers by Sontag and Hickey. PSU closed to within four points (62-58) with 5:07 to go, but KSC closed out the game going 8-of-11 at the line to secure the win.

Plymouth State is back in action Thursday with a non-conference game at UMaine Farmington (7:00 p.m.) Keene State will host UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday (3:00 p.m.)
