NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Sophomore A.J. Tavares (New Bedford, Mass.) led a balanced University of Massachusetts Dartmouth scoring attack with 17 points Saturday afternoon, leading the Corsairs to an 83-72 victory over Plymouth State University in Little East Conference men's basketball action at the Tripp Athletic Center.
The Corsairs, who avenged a 59-58 Panther victory at Plymouth last month, outscored PSU 47-35 in the second half to pull out the victory. Tied 36-all at halftime, UMD took the lead for good with 11:18 remaining. The Corsairs made 10 consecutive free throws to take a 69-59 lead with 4:32 remaining, and the Panthers never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
In addition to Tavares, juniors Devon Maiorano (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Stephane Abelard (Brockton, Mass.) had 14 points apiece, junior Dan Holbrook (Lexington, Mass.) added 13, and junior Paul Pawlowski (Taunton, Mass.) contributed 12. Pawlowski and Holbrook each had eight rebounds to lead the home team.
Senior Mark Dunham (Salem, N.H.) topped the Panthers with 14 points, making four three-point field goals. Senior Kevin Boutilier (North Andover, Mass.) added 13 points, and senior Brandon Boggs (Strafford, N.H.) chipped in with 10. Junior Devin Ruocco (Dover, N.H.) finished with nine points and a team-high eight boards as the Panthers out-rebounded UMass Dartmouth, 34-31.
UMD improves to 12-9 overall and 5-5 in the Little East, while Plymouth State fell to 13-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play. Both teams return to the court Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. with Little East affairs, UMD visiting UMass Boston and Plymouth State traveling to Southern Maine.
