PSU Men’s Basketball wins opener over Centenary

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Mike Walcek (Dover, N.H.) scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds Friday evening to lead the Plymouth State University men's basketball team to a 82-67 victory over Centenary College in the first game of the Cobblestone Inn Tip-Off Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.

Walcek made 6-of-14 field goal tries, while collecting 10 of his 11 rebounds off the defensive glass. He was joined in the double-figures column by freshman Mike Chergey (Bow, N.H.), who made 5-of-10 shots from the field and finished with 15 points and seven boards.

The outcome spoiled a solid performance by Centenary sophomore Alex Kuchar (Rutherford, N.J.), who scored a game-high 29 points. Senior Steve McNamara (Oak Ridge, N.J.) chipped in with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Cyclones.

The Panthers took an early lead against Centenary and never looked back. The Cyclones stayed within 10 points throughout the first half and trailed 38-30 at halftime. PSU maintained a double-digit lead most of the second half, pulling away over the last six minutes.

PSU advances to Saturday's 3:00 p.m. tournament championship game against Wheaton College, after the Lyons upended Husson College in Friday's second contest, 88-82. Centenary and Husson will meet in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.

Lyons to face host Plymouth State in title game

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Brian Zukowski (Dracut, Mass.) scored 21 points Friday night, including his 1,000th career point, to lead Wheaton College to an 88-82 victory over Husson College in the second game of the Cobblestone Inn Tip-Off Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.

Wheaton advances to Saturday's 3:00 p.m. tournament championship game against host Plymouth State, which defeated Centenary in Friday's first game, 82-67. The consolation game is Saturday at 1:00 p.m., followed by the title clash at 3:00 p.m.

Zukowski, who entered the game with 998 career points, hit a jumper midway through the first half to go over the magic milestone, becoming the 11th player in school history to reach 1000 points. He scored 10 of his 21 points from the free throw line while also collecting six rebounds.

The Lyons also got 17 points apiece from juniors Eric Johnston (South Windsor, Conn.) and Brent DiGiavanna (Hanover, Mass.), and 14 points off the bench from freshman Ben Stehle (Newton, Mass.)

Husson, which shot 55 percent from the floor as a team, had five players score in double figures. Senior Jason Harvey (Bucksport, Maine) led all scorers with 23 points, while freshman Martin Cleveland (Portland, Maine) chipped in with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Senior Tyler Muzzy (Greenville, Maine), sophomore Scott Kissinger (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) and junior Sheraud Lee (Bridgeport, Conn.) contributed 14, 13 and 12 points respectively.

Husson maintained the lead most of the first half, enjoying a five-point margin (37-32) at the break. It stayed close the entire second half, with six ties, five lead changes and neither team leading by more than five points until the final seconds.

The Eagles pulled ahead 75-70 with less than four minutes to play, but Wheaton outscored Husson 12-2 over the next three-and-a-half minutes to take an 82-77 advantage with 15 seconds remaining. The Lyons sealed the win by making 8-of-9 free throws down the stretch.
