PSU Men’s Hoop downs Wheaton for Cobblestone Inn Tip-Off Tourney title

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Chris Wilkinson (Newmarket, N.H.) hit 10-of-12 shots from the field and finished with a game-high 22 points Saturday afternoon, leading Plymouth State University to an 86-78 victory over Wheaton College for the championship of the Cobblestone Inn Men's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.

Wilkinson's performance earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team. PSU junior Mike Walcek (Dover, N.H.) earned tourney Most Valuable Player honors, collecting eight points, six rebounds and four assists in the title game after recording a team-leading 19 points and 11 rebounds in Friday's 82-67 first-round win over Centenary.

The Panthers also got a career-high 19 points, five rebounds and six assists from sophomore Ben Huntington (Hampstead, N.H.), 14 points and eight boards from senior Devin Ruocco (Dover, N.H.), and 10 points and six assists from junior Phil Bourassa (Old Orchrd Beach, Maine).

Wheaton was led by senior Brian Zukowski (Dracut, Mass.), who finished with a team-high 17 points and five assists, and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Zukowski became the 11th player in Wheaton history to score his 1000th point in Friday night's 88-82 first-round win over Husson.

Zukowski got support from junior Eric Johnston (South Windsor, Conn.), who added 15 points, and sophomore Kristopher Pedra (Avon, Conn.) and junior Brent DiGiavanna (Hanover, Mass.), who chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Plymouth State led nearly the entire game but couldn't shake the Lyons and the game wasn't decided until the final minute. The Panthers went on a 14-4 run early in the first half to go up by 10 points, and maintained the lead en route to a 48-36 margin at the intermission.

It was a double-digit Panther lead the first 13 minutes of the second half until Wheaton pulled to within four points (75-71) with 3:23 to play. The Lyons could get no closer as PSU converted 11 of 13 free throws in the final three minutes.

Plymouth State shot 54.5 percent from the field while holding Wheaton to a 44.6 percent clip. The teams tied with 31 rebounds apiece.

PSU, 2-0, is back in action Tuesday with a non-conference encounter at Castleton State (7:30 p.m.). Wheaton, 1-1, plays again on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Salve Regina (8:00 p.m.)

Eagles coast to win in consolation game

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshman Martin Cleveland (Portland, Maine) scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Saturday afternoon to lead Husson College to an easy 85-54 win over Centenary College in the consolation game of the Cobblestone Inn Men's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.

Cleveland, who had 15 points in Friday's 88-82 first-round setback to Wheaton College, was Husson's representative on the All-Tournament Team. The Eagles were able to empty the bench in the second half, getting 17 players into the game and 14 players into the scoring column.

Senior Tyler Muzzy (Greenville, Maine) helped the Eagles' cause, chipping in with 14 points and seven boards, while junior Sheraud Lee (Bridgeport, Conn.) hit three three-pointers and finished with 11 points.

Senior Kyle Warner (Severn, Md.) led Centenary with 13 points. Sophomore Alex Kuchar (Rutherford, N.J.), who scored a tournament-high 29 points in Friday's night's 82-67 first-round loss to Plymouth State, added 11 points against Husson and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Husson scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back. The Eagles pulled ahead by 15 points (34-19) with three minutes to go in the first half before the Cyclones battled back to pull to within eight points (38-30) at the break.

Husson opened the second half with a 21-7 burst to go ahead by 22 points and Centenary didn't threaten the rest of the way. The Eagles shot 52.5 percent from the floor for the game while the Cyclones connected at just a 33.3 percent clip.

Husson, 1-1, returns home to host Saint Joseph's (Maine) in its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 28. Centenary, 0-2, plays its home opener this Tuesday, Nov. 21, vs. Berkeley College (5:30 p.m.)
