PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The top freshman on the Plymouth State University men's basketball team was honored by the Little East Conference Monday for his accomplishments in three Panther games last week.
Freshman Mike Chergey (Bow, N.H.) was named LEC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week after leading the Panthers in three outings. He has burst onto the college basketball scene and is becoming one of the top players in the league.
A 6'5" center, Chergey (left) averaged 21.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in PSU's three games last week while shooting 58.1 percent from the field. He tossed in a season and career-high 31 points Tuesday in a win over Rivier, making 14-of-20 shots, and added 17 and 16 points, respectively, in losses Thursday and Saturday to Bridgewater State and Rhode Island College. Chergey also converted 78 percent from the free throw line, and chipped in with four assists, two blocked shots and three steals.
Chergey ranks among the LEC leaders in several categories, including his 59.6 field goal percentage which leads the conference. He is also tied for fourth in scoring (16.1 points per game) and ranks 13th in both rebounding (6.0 per game) and free throw percentage (71.1).
PSU, 5-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play, has two non-conference games this week to wrap up the first semester. The Panthers will visit Tufts University on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) and return home to host Johnson & Wales University Saturday at Foley Gymnasium (3:00 p.m.)
