PSU Mens Hoop upended by Rhode Island College
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rhode Island College used a strong defensive effort to defeat Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon, 67-52, in a Little East Conference men's basketball game at the Murray Center.
The Anchormen limited the Panthers to a 31.5 shooting percentage, and held the visitors without a three-point basket in 16 attempts. RIC, the LEC pre-season favorite, improves its record to 16-2 overall and 7-2 in the Little East, while PSU suffered its fourth straight loss and dropped to 8-12 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
Plymouth State played a little defense of its own, holding the Anchorman to a 38 percent shooting clip. Senior Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, Maine) finished with a team-high 16 points for the Anchormen, including a pair of three-pointers as RIC was jumping out to an 8-0 lead. Sophomore Tirrell Hill (Bronx, N.Y.) and senior Brian Stanko (Swansea, Mass.) added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Freshman Mike Chergey (Bow, N.H.) provided the offensive highlights for the Panthers, coming off the bench to score 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting. The RIC defense limited PSU's leading scorers, seniors Devin Ruocco (Dover, N.H.) and Mike Walcek (Dover, N.H.), to six and nine points, respectively. The two combined to make just six of 25 shots.
Plymouth State stayed within striking distance with solid free throw shooting (18-for-24) and rebounding, finishing with a 43-33 advantage on the boards.
The Panthers are idle until next Saturday (Feb. 3) when they begin a three-game home stand against UMass Dartmouth (3:00 p.m.). RIC hosts No. 2-ranked Amherst on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.)
