Ruocco leads PSU Mens Basketball past UMass Boston
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Devin Ruocco (Dover, N.H.) scored a career-high 33 points Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Foley Gymnasium, and Plymouth State University coasted past the University of Massachusetts Boston, 96-67, Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference men's basketball game.
Ruocco matched his career best with seven three-point baskets, as he hit 11 of 17 shots from the floor and seven of nine from beyond the three-point arc. He helped PSU even the season series with the Beacons at one game apiece, as UMB won the first meeting in Boston last month in overtime, 97-90. Plymouth State improves to 10-13 overall and 3-9 in conference games, while UMB, the defending LEC Tournament champion, is now 8-14 and 4-8.
Two other Panthers joined Ruocco in double figures in the scoring department. Sophomore Ben Huntington (Hampstead, N.H.) scored 14 points and added five assists, and senior Mike Walcek (Dover, N.H.) contributed his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The outcome spoiled a strong performance from UMB senior Tony Barros (Dorchester, Mass.), who scored 29 of his team's 67 points.
Plymouth State led wire to wire, jumping out to a 16-6 in the first five minutes and never looking back. PSU maintained a double-digit advantage much of the first half, leading by as many as 20 points before settling for a 43-29 margin at the break.
UMB got as close as nine points early in the second half, but PSU went on a 28-6 burst over the next six minutes to put the game away.
The Panthers wrap up the regular season with a pair of LEC road games next week, visiting Keene State on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.) and Eastern Connecticut on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). UMass Boston concludes the regular season with conference home games Tuesday vs. Southern Maine (5:30 p.m.) and Saturday against Rhode Island College (1:00 p.m.)
