Keene State defeats Plymouth State in mens basketball
KEENE, N.H. - Sophomores Tyler Kathan (Ludlow, Vt.) and Nate Anderson (Westminster, Mass.) recorded double-doubles Tuesday night to lead Keene State College to an 88-73 Little East Conference men's basketball victory over rival Plymouth State University at Spaulding Gymnasium.
Kathan led the way with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Anderson added 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Owls improve to 20-4 overall and 10-3 in LEC play, marking the seventh 20-win season in 10 years at Division III and fifth under coach Rob Colbert. PSU had a two-game winning streak stopped and fell to 10-14 overall and 3-10 in the conference.
The Panthers got strong performances from a pair of freshmen off the bench; Jason O'Keefe (Everett, Mass.) scored a season-high 20 points and Mike Chergey (Bow, N.H.) contributed 14 points and seven rebounds.
The Owls were held scoreless for a stretch of seven minutes and 15 seconds as the Panthers took an early 17-10 lead. Keene State battled back to take a 32-31 advantage by halftime.
Keene State heated up after the break, shooting 64 percent (16-of-25). The Owls opened the half with a 9-3 run to take a 41-34 lead, and extended the margin to 47-38 at the 15:34 mark. Another Owl spurt pushed lead to 17 points (60-43) with 11:42 to play, and it was a 20-point game (72-52) with five minutes remaining.
KSC, which holds a 14-11 series lead over the Panthers in LEC play, has won the last four meetings between the two teams.
Both teams complete their regular season LEC schedule on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.; The Owls host Southern Maine and the Panthers travel to Eastern Connecticut.
